Passive Solar Design uses physics to naturally heat and cool the building, rather than completely relying on mechanical equipment.
The angles at which the sun hits your building through the year will influence the design of your building relative to your home’s ability to heat and cool itself naturally. How low and how high the sun is in winter and summer sun depend on your location. Understanding how your site relates to the sun can allow you to control when and how you have heat gain from the sun and when you don’t.

We want buildings to be vapour-permeable so they do not trap unwanted moisture. We do NOT want outside air entering the building uncontrolled. Make sure the perforations in the walls for windows and doors are airtight.
Insulation: slow the flow of heat
Materials that insulate, do so by impeding the flow of heat energy. This means that heat escapes (or enters) very slowly. This in turn means that if you heat or cool the inside space you use less energy to stay comfortable.
Air pockets give materials insulating properties. Insulating materials tend to be lightweight and have small, evenly distributed air pockets. Examples of insulating materials include: wool, straw, hemp, cellulose, pumice, and more.
Thermal Mass: rechargeable battery for heat
Thermal mass materials absorb heat energy when there is excess, and then release heat when they are warmer than their surroundings. This means they can be used to absorb daytime energy from the sun and release that solar heat at night. This evens out temperature fluctuations.
Materials that store heat energy tend to be dense and heavy. Examples include: water, stone, rammed earth, adobe bricks, cob, adobe floors, clay plasters.
Clay materials have an added benefit because clay materials absorb humidity out of the air. For example, clay plasters in bathrooms can help to eliminate mould and mildew since it absorbs moisture and dehumidifies the indoor air.
